earthquake hawaii
A small earthquake hit Hawaii earlier today, which was felt by residents in places like Honolulu and Lanai.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake's magnitude was 3.6 and struck at 2:12 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2011. The quake was centered 22 miles east-southeast of Honolulu, 11.8 miles deep. Initial reports put the quake at a magnitude 3.3 to about 80 miles south of Honolulu with a depth of only 4.2 miles, but the USGS revised its initial report.
The Honolulu Advertiser Star reports the initial reporting gap may be due to the scarcity of seismic recording instruments on Oahu. The cause of the earthquake may have been triggered by the bottom of the ocean bend under the weight of the island.
So far, no reports of damage or injuries were reported and no tsunami warning has been issued.
