The Associated Press reports that long time Marvel and DC comics writer Dwayne McDuffie died in Los Angeles, California. It could be caused by complications from surgery performed the night before his death.

McDuffie was just in Los Angeles to promote his animated film All-Star Superman, released today in stores, and stars Christina Hendricks as the voice of Lois Lane.

McDuffie was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan and attended Roeper School. He participated in the study of physics at the University of Michigan, earned a degree in English and an MA in physics [citation needed]. He then moved to New York to attend film school at New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

He co-hosted a radio program of comedy, and also writes under the pseudonym of comedians and late-night programs of television comedy. While working as a copy-editor for a financial magazine, a friend got him an interview for an assistant editor position at Marvel Comics.
