A 3.6 magnitude earthquake in California was felt most strongly in the East Bay and Peninsula areas, according to the United States Geological Survey.
It was followed this morning by an earthquake 2.7 reported near Yorba Linda in Orange County.
But the Bay Area earthquake was much larger and felt over a wide area.
The earthquake, which struck at 11:36 p.m.appears in the center of Hayward fault about six miles south of Oakland. An earthquake of magnitude 2.3 earthquake rolled through about five minutes later.

japan tsunami
A magnitude 8.9 earthquake slammed Japan's northeastern coast Friday, unleashing a 13-foot tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland. Fires triggered by the quake burned out of control up and down the coast.
Tsunami warnings are in place for countries including the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Chile, Ecuador and Columbia.
Authorities are evacuating tens of thousands of people from vulnerable areas.
The largest waves are headed south-west from Japan at about 500mph and could cross the Pacific basin in 24 hours. There have been waves from four to seven metres high crashing into the Japanese coast.
I have never though that this will happen, the fifth biggest earthquake since 1900.
some earthquake ranging about 7.5 magnitude are often happen(since wednesday) before this.
Hope that they are safe, always happy.. Japan...

At least one person was killed and there were reports of several injuries in Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers away, where buildings shook violently through the main quake and the wave of massive aftershocks that followed.
TV footage showed waves of muddy waters sweeping over farmland near the city of Sendai, carrying buildings, some on fire, inland as cars attempted to drive away.
"This is a rare major quake, and damages could quickly rise by the minute," said Junichi Sawada, an official with Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
